On handwritten notes I spell out the month, use numerical day, and 4-digit year. IE April 19, 2017. This has the least confusion.
For filenames etc I use 4-digit year, numerical 2-digit month, numerical day. This allows the directory list to be sorted properly. IE 2017-04-19-logcopy, etc.
